China Travel Guide - Travel in Macau

Macau (ào mén 澳門), located on the southeast coast of China, is a special administrative region of the country. Being Asia's well-known gambling Mecca, Macau is a place to find the traditional Chinese culture while enjoying the exotic Portuguese buildings. The name of the city is derived from the word Magao (A-Ma Temple), which was the shrine dedicated to Mazu, a sacred sea goddess respected by the local people. It was said that in the middle of sixteenth century when the Portuguese first set foot there, one of the officers asked a fisherman the name of the land. The man misunderstanding the officer’s meaning, answered “Magao” - the name of A-Ma Temple in front them. The word became the Portuguese name for the land and for nearly 400 years, the Portuguese ruled here prior to Macau's official return to the People's Republic of China on December 20, 1999 as a special administrative region.

        DON'T Placing Chopsticks Unevenly
Chinese people regard it as inauspicious to place a pair of
chopsticks unevenly on the table before, during or after a meal. They call it "son thong liang duan", or " three long and two short", which indicates death. According to traditional Chinese customs, dead
bodies were placed in coffins in the past. In those days, coffins were
made from two short boards at the front and back, and three long
ones at the two sides and the bottom-hence the saying. Therefore, it is taboo to place one's chopsticks unevenly on the table.

DON'T Pointing at Others with Chopsticks
You should never perch your chopsticks between the thumb, middle, ring and little fingers, while sticking out your index finger, as it implies abuse. In most cases, Chinese people point at others with their index fingers to scold them. Therefore, such a movement is unacceptable. It is also considered bad manners to point at others, with your chopsticks, while chatting during a meal.
